I don’t see nearly enough AGATB love on tumblr and I would think tumblr ladies would be all over that shit because they are fantastic fucking YA novels with lovely complex female characters and relationships. They pass the bechdel test so hard they’ll make your head spin

holy butts

I just realized I really need to read The Diviners again because it was totally fuckin sweet

That was a good read. Thanks again, Libba Bray.

What frightens you?
What makes the hair on your arms rise, your palms sweat, the breath catch in your chest like a wild thing caged?
Is it the dark? A fleeting memory of a bedtime story, ghosts and goblins and witches hiding in the shadows? Is is the way the wind picks up just before a storm, the hint of wet in the air that makes you want to scurry home to the safety of your fire?
Or is it something deeper, something much more frightening, a monster deep inside that you’ve glimpsed only in pieces, that vast unknown of your own soul where secrets gather with a terrible power, the dark inside?

If you will listen, I will tell you a story—one whose ghosts cannot be banished by the comfort of a roaring fire. I will tell you the story of how we found ourselves in a realm where dreams are formed, destiny is chosen, and magic is as real as your handprint in snow. I will tell you how we unlocked the Pandora’s box of ourselves, tasted freedom, stained our souls with blood and choice, and unleashed a horror on the world that destroyed its dearest Order. These pages are a confession of all that has led to this cold, gray dawn. What will be now, I cannot say.

Is your heart beating faster?
Do the clouds seem to be gathering on the horizon?
Does the skin on your neck feel stretched tight, waiting for a kiss you both fear and need?
Will you be scared?
Will you know the truth?

Libba Bray. How are you such a freaking amazing author? I want to read your books forever and ever and ever and ever.

I think I make too many polyvore things

Felicity moves in beside Pippa, her arms folded. “Where were you earlier?” she asks in a low voice.
Pippa shrugs her off.
"Gathering berries."

"This is what they have in place of freedom— time and gossip. Their lives are small and careful. I do not wish to live this way. I should like to make my mark. To venture opinions that may not be polite or even correct but are mine nonetheless. If I am to be hanged for anything, I should like to feel that I go to the gallows on my own strength."

Tired of Twilight.

I don’t know what’s prompting this. Maybe it was the ridiculous trailer they played for Breaking Dawn the last time I was at the movies. More likely it’s the frustration I have had with pop culture for years reaching an unexplained boiling point.

  Twilight sucks.

Let’s get something straight. I’ve read all the books and used to LOVE them. I’ve since wised-up.

WHY do girls love this filth? Well, I like to imagine that Meyer was lying stomach-down on her pink comforter one afternoon, fuzzy-topped pencil in hand, trying to capture this sickening teenage-girl angst and overshot the age range, because what she really accomplished was a trip back to a very Disney fairy-tale childhood full of chivalry and outdated gender roles.

Bella is the most passive, worthless heroine I’ve seen to date in any work of fiction. She’s worse than any wimpy Disney princess you remember. Bella demonstrates the life-truth that if the right person comes along, you should abandon any plans for college or really a life of your own, and just become a mindless drone, settle down and squeeze out a kid as soon as possible. (And before anybody gets defensive, I’m not attacking the family-life. I’m protesting the loss of oneself in feverish devotion to anything.)

Edward and Bella are unrealistic, underdeveloped characters painting the man as the ultimate protector and provider and the woman as the ultimate CHILD.  This isn’t fair for either gender. Guys shouldn’t be expected to take care of a woman in every way, and a woman shouldn’t want that.

I’d like to think that this frustration isn’t necessary, that Twilight is harmless, but it’s not. The idea behind it is. It’s okay to have escapist fantasies, to get lost in a book or movie or video game for a while. But why didn’t Twilight just end up an unknown work in the back of the book-store like so many other books? Why did this particular book gain such momentum? Certainly not for Meyer’s writing prowess.

It’s because this idea of a weak princess being swept off her feet by some gentlemanly clone is really fucking familiar to us, really comfortable, so people buy it up.

Twilight is dangerous because it’s not coming from Stephenie Meyer. It’s coming from us. Contrary to popular opinion, the media isn’t some giant, intangible monster trying to destroy our morals, strength of will, what-have-you. We aren’t powerless against what gets spit out onto the movie screen or in print. We create and perpetuate it by deciding what we partake in.

So kids. Cut it out. Choose something quality to be obsessed with.

There’s a lot to choose from. If it’s the magical realism-young-adult fiction (with maybe a touch of romance) that you’re looking for, try the Gemma Doyle books by Libba Bray. The protagonist has a sense of humor and a voice. =O

I’m sorry if I sound like a bitter old codger, but I’m so tired of people tolerating weakness. It’s just plain gross.

Don’t really know what I’m doing with tumblr. Considering I’ve got a whopping total of one follower at the moment, and I haven’t got anything interesting to say, this post is born less out of any narcissistic delusion of people caring what I say and more out of boredom and internet-access. ENJOY, nobody. :D

Watching Craig (Ferguson - I will say his last name this once, because you know who I’m talking about. If you don’t, you should. Hint- he’s Scottish, and the only bearable late-night talk show host I’ve found. (Although I hear Fallon’s decent)). He’s talking about Dr. Who, Comic-Con and general geekdom. I’ll wait while you go look him up, lovely, unaware nerd-peoples.

Recently started watching the “Dr. Whos” on netflix after probably a year of my cousin and best friend telling me I should. I always knew I’d like it, considering that they, along with my FAVORITE celebrities (Craig and the boys of Nerdist) are Whovians, and they all have very good taste. I finally just watched it. Needless to say,  I’m a little obsessed.

I say a little. I mean helplessly. Work is the only thing that keeps me from going on a week-long netflix binge.

(Is this a little like my “formal” introduction to the world of tumblr?) It is now.

I LIKE: Nerds. The Nerdist podcast/Chris Hardwick. Craig Ferguson. Mythbusters. Community. 30 Rock. Dr. Who. Wheel of Time. Lotr. Harry Potter. How to Train Your Dragon. Libba Bray. Batman. Wolverine. Groucho Marx.  Movies. Imdb. Regina Spektor. Muse. Beirut. Old music. New music. Pigs. Poodles. STUFF. EVERYTHING.

I DO NOT LIKE: Taylor Swift, dishonest people and Ed Hardy. Amongst other things.

I REALLY REALLY LIKE: Honey Mustard & Onion pretzels and a diet pepsi. Breakfast of champions, folks.

So. Nice to meet you all (?) #excessiveuseofparentheses

P.S. I just came from twitter. Is it cool if I hashtag here?
